Commitment to Sustainable and Responsible Seafood
At Seafood America, we are dedicated to providing our customers with high-quality, sustainable, and traceable seafood sourced from environmentally and socially responsible suppliers. Our commitment to sustainability ensures that our seafood is harvested or farmed in a way that maintains or enhances production over the long term without compromising the health of marine ecosystems.
To uphold these principles, Seafood America has established a Quality Systems Department responsible for overseeing sustainability efforts. This department ensures that all purchasing decisions align with our environmental commitments and do not jeopardize the resources needed for future generations.
Seafood America guarantees full traceability of its ingredients, utilizing trace register systems where required. Additionally, all our sourcing practices are validated by the Safe Quality Food Institute (SQFI) to maintain the highest safety and sustainability standards.
We require our vendor partners to meet rigorous sustainability certifications:
• Wild-Caught Seafood: Must come from fisheries that are either Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified, undergoing full MSC assessment, or engaged in a comprehensive Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) aimed at meeting MSC standards.
• Farm-Raised Seafood: Must be certified by at least one of the following:
o Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) 2-star or greater
o Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)
o GLOBAL G.A.P.
Blue Swimming Crab Fisheries Management
Seafood America is also committed to the responsible management of Blue Swimming Crab Fisheries. We exclusively source from vendors who are active members of the National Fisheries Institute’s Crab Council, which funds and supports sustainability efforts for the species. The Crab Council collaborates with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), a respected non governmental organization that works with industry and government agencies to develop and implement effective fisheries improvement programs.
